STEVIE'S SAY - NORTH ISLAND CHAMPS
Hi Everyone,
This was the 5th time that the 2002 North Island Champs were scheduled to run. At drivers briefing there were a few drops of rain. Luckily the racing was not going to be affected by it for the rest of the night.
We got to draw our grid for the 1st race. I was the first to draw and I drew 12, out of 14. Not the bext grid to start with but it was OK.
We got the cars all fired up at 7pm then had a small warm-up.
First Heat. I thought something might happen in the first corner, so I was cautious at the start. Going into the first corner, we were six cars wide, it was amazing, somehow we all got through the first corner OK. Not so lucky in the second corner. Somebody spun and a few collided. So it was a restart from the beginning.
When we restarted, the cars seemed a lot less bunched up, and I got up into 5th position. We did 2 laps and someone spun out, so it was an original-grid restart again!
I think we started the race about 3 or 4 times before we got it right. There were 2 different tracks during the race. The first part of the race, the track was what I'm used to at Western Springs (quite soft and grippy). But for the second half of the race, it went really slick. I played with the top wing, changed my driving line, used more brakes, but I think we had a little too much stagger. I spun up with about 5 laps to go.
Unfortunately I didnt get a restart, so not a good result for the 1st race. It was scheduled to be a 20 lapper.
Second Heat For the 2nd race we changed a few things. This race I was off grid 3. I didnt get a good start, I dropped down to 7th.
The track for this race was quite slick and really dusty. We managed to get back up to 3rd, because a few cars had problems in front of us and my car had a realy good set-up on it. We ended the race in 3rd. This race was also 20 laps. A good run over all I think.
Feature It was feature time. From my result in the 2nd race, I had qualified 4th, which was great. Wakeo was on 3 and Colin Entwhistle and Dean Brindle were on the front row. This race was to be run over 25 laps. The first start I spun out in the first corner. It was lucky that no-one crashed into me and also that it was in the 1st lap, so I got to restart in my original position.
At this stage I knew the track was dry. I moved the wing back, which seemed too work, but I knew this wasnt going to be a race were you drive hard. I spun out again in about lap 5 but managed to keep going. I had dropped to position 8.
I was hoping for a yellow flag, so the field would bunch up, but it was not to be.
I got past Phil Game and up into 7th towards the end of the race, but I slid wide and he got back in front of me. I couldn't find anywhere to make a pass, and I ran out of laps.
So 8th was my final position.
All in all it was a good night. No damage!
Looking forward to being back at the Springs this weekend, see you there.
