STEVIE'S SAY - FIRST RACE MEETING IN THE US
Stevie has competed in his first race of the season in the US. It was a spur of the moment thing, as Stevie explains below....
“Hey All!
Im finally back in America. I left NZ for on the 6th of April from Auckland to Los Angeles, then onto Dallas and up to Des Moines. I arrived here on Tuesday night the 6th of April.
I got into Des Moines and it was a quick trip to see where Bob Trostles workshop was, to Duane Davis’s to pick up my loaner car for the summer, then to Tom Schmeh’s place where I’ll be staying this summer. I have been up at the workshop everyday since I’ve been here, except Thursday. That’s when I met Ralph Capitani, who is the promoter at Knoxville Raceway.
On Friday, I got to the workshop at the normal time, which is an hour from where im staying. We had to pick up a few things, so off we went to get them. We got back to the workshop, about 11. While we were out, Tom Schmeh had called. Bob called him back checking what he had called for. Tom said that he would really like us to go to Donnellson to race that night. Bob wasn’t so sure, so he said we’ll think about it. He asked me if I wanted to go, and I said yes!!
So Bob called Larry Weeks to see if he could make it, he had things planned, but then decided to come, then Bob decided to go racing. Our plan was just to start the motor to see if it went. It was a 3 hour drive to Donnellson to race with the Sprint Invaders on a 3/8 mile track. We got there and decided to go and race as well.
Since I was a rookie to the Sprint Invaders, I had to start off the back. Only 4 cars in my heat went through to the feature. The car was good and we ran 6th. The 4th and 5th cars were just in front of me, we possibly could have got past them, but we had a good race anyhow.
So we started the B, inside 4th row (7th). Only 4 cars went through to the feature. As the race went on, I was getting more and more comfortable with the car. We finished 7th.
We had a good night and I learnt a lot. On the way home, there was a big electrical storm. I have never seen lightning as bright as that before. It was incredible.
Tonight I have my 1st practice at Knoxville 7pm - 10pm. If that's rained out, we'll drive about 2 and a half hours and race at a track called Burlington, with the Sprint Invaders.
